It can be legal to prepare food in a home kitchen, but there are many requirements. Each county in Washington State has a health dept/environmental health that issues permits.
To find the one for your county, go to the link provided. Then choose the county, then forms/applications - environmental health - food permit. (each county web site is a little different, but this should get you there). The key words here are “food permit”. Good luck. oakhill

Baking at home for commercial purposes a business license and meeting certain regulations for cleanliness, etc. You can’t just bake cookies, etc., and sell them out of your home. You might technically be able to do it “under the radar” but if you ever advertise anywhere then you have stepped beyond “baking for friends” for pay and into commercial business sphere and will be liable for meeting all the requirements of a food business in your area as well as for taxes on the sales from the goods. You could also be found out if your taxes are audited and your income is found to be higher than what you’ve actually reported, i.e., if you are not paying taxes on those earnings.

Call your LOCAL government city hall for guidance, which would be the jurisdiction responsible for licensing and inspecting, and they can refer you to a state agency, if that’s necessary. Máire Siobhán

It’s legal, but you’ll be subject to inspections, as all businesses that serve food are.

yeah i live in bellevue!
my dad works out of our home..
in a shop we have 10 acres.
but its kind of like the same thing
its legal.

Contact the SBA for listing of local “one stop” resources for home businesses. You will need food licenses and inspections and definately look into insurance to protect your assets. The SBA is a government resource that’s FREE. rayt721

for catering… heck ya its legal. The only liability issues arise when you have people eating at your house. You will need an inspection. Dan C
