Is accepting private donations for the renovation for a police station an ethical/legal problem?

legal problem
The Yahelli Swami asked:

“Renovations to the station were completed, including a phone in the lobby, which connects to the 911 Center, as well as cameras and locks to ensure the safety of community members with emergencies. Those renovations cost $10,603.80, which mostly came from donations and money that was pledged.”

Is it an ethical and/or legal problem for a municipality to accept private donations and pledges to renovate a police station? I have an opinion but I want to see what others think.
