What happens when you hire a lawyer for liscense suspension?

I heard they can get your suspensions lowered to lesser charges, I also heard that they can do this over the phone instead of making a court hearing to settle it. Anyone have experience with this? I have a family friend that’s a lawyer that supposedly has connections where the citations happened, can this help?
