What is a reasonable retaining fee for a lawyer?

lawyer
saryjane21 asked:

I live in Virginia and am in need of a lawyer that practices Family Law for a custody/visitation dispute. The lawyer I met with today wants $5000. This seems high but I have no frame of reference. Does anyone know what retaining fees range in Virginia? Thanks.

Not sure about family law, but the lawyers I know in Virginia who do worker’s compensation stuff charge 150-200 an hour. By the time they are done with a case the fees are around 5,000 so that is probably about right. red_necksuck
