If same sex marriage is legalized everywhere, monogamous loving couples can breath a sign of relief, knowing they can't be kicked out of their partner's hospital room, knowing that the family of their partner can't step in if their partner dies and take away children they have been raising together, knowing that if their partner dies the blood family can't come in and take the house they lived in together just because it happened to be in the deceased's name.
My twin sister married her wife in Iowa a few months ago, but it took 5 months here in florida to finally change my sister-in-law's name to her married name because Florida doesn't recognize the marriage.
My sister and her wife had to have legal documents that they carry with them at all times in case one of them goes to the emergency room, so that they can make decisions for one another (like a spouse is allowed to do) if one of them is unable to make medical decisions. Who knows a person's stance on organ donation better than their life partner (be it same sex or hetero)? Yet in states that don't recognize gay marriages, the family is asked instead, and in many cases the person may not have been talking to their family in years.

Some people will say allowing same sex marriage will mess up taxes by giving the marriage tax break to same sex couples, but I think it would even out in the end because once a couple gets married they usually make bigger purchases together (houses and cars) which are also taxed.

I am not gay, and I am divorced and will probably never be married again, but that is my choice, why shouldn't every one have the choice to be married to the person they love?

Social effect I see happening, is more gay couples will be able to adopt once they are legally married, and there will be less children in foster care that way, and more children in loving homes where they will have the chance to grow up happy and loved and get a the attention and education they need to be productive members of society.
Another social affect I see happening is that the religious people will see the world didn't end because same sex couples were allowed to marry. mtr

First recognize that the voters in Maine were not voting to make gay marriage illegal. They were voting against making gay relationships equal to marriage. Gays can still get married in a secular ceremony.

Every civilized society has to control the sexual drives of their young people. The best (and perhaps the only successful) way has always been to channel sexual drives into having and raising one's own children. Our society needs to support and honor the classic marriage at every opportunity because marriage is that institution that raises the next generation.

To accept gay marriage means to start supporting it with tax dollars because marriage has real ($) benefits. How can we then draw the line with gays? Why not incest? Once children are not part of the goal, how can we exclude two brothers from marrying, for example? All of the gay arguments apply. The public will, in disgust, start rescinding all support and encouragement to all marriages.

To answer your question, government will eventually not recognize any marriage as having any legal weight and will therefore not be able to provide any benefits to marriage at all. At least, that's the legal effect.

The social effect is that marriage will mean almost nothing because anyone who wants to can declare themselves to be married but since marriage is not officially recognized, it will mean the same as "we're living together for now". So there's the social effect.

Disease will increase as young people try to experiment to figure out their sexual orientation. Swine flu may become a venereal disease as people experiement with bestiality. Matthew T

Gays generally have lots of money. As a group, they usually rank high in socioeconomic status, have more education than average and tend to inherit lots of money. Why? Who knows? Let the statisticians figure that one out.

The fact that they are gotten so far in their efforts to be a recognized and legitimized as eligible for legal marriage with all the rights of a married couple, speaks for the fact that they bring to the table their way higher than average earning power.

Money is power in this country. It's more important than the sanctity of marriage or even God. Sad but true.

In states that legalize gay marriage, you will see gays move there in droves and the states are hoping to beef up the economy with them. It's all about the almighty dollar these days. metallic moment

It would have a terrible effect on the minds of children. God created marriage as between a man and a woman for a reason. Brigid O' Somebody

Gay people would be happy to have the same rights as straight couples. Other than that, there will be no effect, legally, socially or economically. It should be legal in every state, just like it is for heterosexuals. DebbieP
